Let’s Get Started With Measuring Your BMI

Enter your measurements to start determining your BMI. Keep in mind that BMI does not take physical activity, age or gender into consideration, and that it is only dependent on height and weight.

What does BMI determine?

The BMI calculator is a tool that measures the ratio of your height to your weight to determine the amount of body fat that you have. While BMI isn’t always the perfect measure of weight category, it is a good start. Calculate your BMI and discuss the result with your doctor.

BMI is used to classify patients as underweight, normal weight, overweight or obese. BMI gives a more accurate estimate of total body fat than assessing body weight alone.

To accurately measure your waist circumference, place the tape measure around your body, halfway between the lowest rib and the top of your hip bone and breathe out normally. Make sure to measure directly against your skin while ensuring that the tape measure is parallel to the ground and not compressing the skin in any way.

The measurement in the guidance below can vary though depending on your ethnic background, gender and age.

  • Male Waist Circumference: Your risk is increased at 94 cm or more and is greatly increased at 102 cm or more.
  • Female Waist Circumference: Your risk is increased at 80 cm or more and is greatly increased at 88 cm or more.
